The 9th edition of Performance Garten explores the vibrant contact zone between performance and moving images. It transplants itself spatially into the archetypal space of the first moving image, the cinema. In doing so, the project simultaneously responds to the tradition of time-based media in performance art, newly cultivated artistic production methods in the home office, and to our changed perception of the cinema space, which we experience with a pandemic-trained gaze as an intimate place of communality and a bubble of physical presence.
Conceptually, the project takes up the phenomenon of friction, focusing on different understandings of its social, political and ecological dimensions. Along with cultural theorist Anna Lowenhaupt Tsing, we understand friction as a »zone of awkward engagement«, unequal, unstable and creative interaction across differences. At the same time, the title FRICTI9NS opens the way to the fictional, the polyphony of narratives and stories in plural.
Performance Garten presents twelve artistic works in a six-hour program, consisting of performances, media works and installations with performative moments, that open up a »zone of awkward engagement« where they create friction, show resistance, transfer energies and lose themselves in a fleeting moment of force.
